New Bangkok: Birmingham, MI 05/11/07

New Bangkok: Thai Bistro is a Thai restaurant in Birmingham, MI. It has been one of my favorite places every since my freshman year at Cranbrook Kingswood.

Like many other Asian cuisines in United States, New Bangkok does not serve authentic Thai. However, last year I used to come here with a Thai scholar who now graduated, and she commented that "this is not real Thai, mainly some of the ingredients, but still I like it."

I remember some of the servers are from Laos, though I am not sure about all of them. I would say this place serves Southeastern Asia semi-fusion food mainly in Thai style.

Last night I went with my dear friends, young freshmen Mary and Cindy. Cindy, who was not feeling like getting a whole meal, simply got a shawarma sandwich from Pita Cafe and joined me and Mary at New Bangkok. I was a little irritated at first becuase I had to move from the window seat I chose, because I was told that it was reserved even though I didn't see any signs. I soon got a booth seat which I prefer, so it was fine, but I still wish they put up a recognizable sign. Yet I really enjoyed the dinner, both because of the food and company.

Mary ordered her usual favorite, Pineapple Fried Rice, mild, with chicken. I tried the Gang Keaw Warn, the green curry, which I didn't have for a while. I ordered it medium as usual, with tofu and beef.

I always enjoy the fried rice at New Bangkok. It has the "fire taste", and the onion gives such delight when it's stir-fried. I thought the pineapples did not blend with other taste of the rice.

Personally I liked it because I do not like pineapple with rice, but people who usually order pineapple fried rice do! The pineapple itself was fine though, and Mary still loved it.

Gang Keaw Warn is a green curry dish. It was cooked with bell peppers, eggplant and peas. I ordered it with tofu and beef. It was good.

Yes, I love this place. Some say it's "crowd pleaser", and surely the pad thai here is sweet and somewhat oily and slippery. But who cares. It's good. Also, if you order rice or noodles, you are garanteed to have left overs tomorrow. This is why I usually save the noodle orders for a big group sharing, because unlike other dish including rice, noodle surely loses its taste immediately after the first cool down.

My recommendations are Pad Thai, Fried Rice, the Chef Special especially if you like garlic flavor, Pad Cashew with chicken, the only dish I like to order mild, Bai Ka Prow with beef, Seafood Curry, and Gang Ped. My favorite is Panang curry. Satay is pretty good for an appetizer too.

Here are some of the previous pictures I took before creating this blog:
